Yucatan Peninsula

The Yucatan Peninsula is located in southeastern Mexico. It is made up of three states: Quintana Roo (capital city: Chetumal), Yucatan (capital city: Merida) and Campeche (capital city: Campeche). It is bordered by the Caribbean Sea on the east and the Gulf of Mexico on the west. The peninsula is about 185 miles long and 155 wide. The eastern coast is bordered by the second longest coral barrier in the world, second only to Australia.

The underground of this vast limestone portion of southeastern Mexico is perforated by underground ways that create cenotes, a typical feature of this area. Two speleo-divers have made a major discovery by establishing a connection between the second and third major underground rivers in the world, Sac Actun and Nohoch Nah Chich. They were able to prove that they are actually one single river, the longest one known to date, 95 miles long.
The Yucatan Peninsula is very interesting to visit because of its flora and fauna, and the numerous natural reserves that can be found in this region.
